In years past, the Medicare program has been criticized for the lack of coverage of preventive services. The preventive services coverage has been significantly expanded and our present problem is that they are not being adequately utilized. You are encouraged to go to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Web site, www.cms.hhs.gov, then click on "Medicare" in the upper left. On the page which comes up, scroll down the right hand column until you come to "Prevention." There you will find general information as well as the specific items listed with which you should become familiar and encourage your patients to have these valuable services carried out.
If you have not been utilizing this extremely valuable coverage for your Medicare patients, please begin to familiarize yourself with each of the categories and institute a step-by-step, if not a one-step, complete utilization program for your Medicare patients. |
