Medicare Preventive Services (GEN)
Posted May 10, 2007

Medicare now has an extensive array of preventive services which, as I have pointed out previously in my articles, are being inadequately utilized. There is an excellent Quick Reference Information chart which on two pages presents essential information for 17 Medicare Preventive Services. After familiarizing yourself with this Quick Reference Information, you can further explore the more detailed information on these benefits. You can access this chart on the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Web site by going to www.cms.hhs.gov/MLNProducts/Downloads/ education_products_prevserv.pdf, then scrolling down to "Quick Reference Information." Here you will find both Medicare Preventive Services and Medicare Immunization Billing in chart form. These will be readily available bases for your utilization of Medicare preventive services for the greatest advantage to your Medicare patient.

For the more detailed information on the CMS Web site, go to the Internet Only Manuals (IOMs) page at www.cms.hhs.gov/Manuals/IOM/list.asp. Click on 100-04 (Medicare Claims Processing Manual), and then go to Chapter 18 - Preventive and Screening Services. There you will find more detailed information which will guide you to a fuller use of the preventive Medicare benefits.
